Studio Notes: Building the DWSS Sound

The DWSS sound is simple to feel and hard to fake: low end that moves air, mids that tell the truth, and a top that glows without cutting glass. In the studio we treat every session like a night drive down Woodward — focused, a little dangerous, never sterile.

Principles we keep coming back to

1. Weight first. If the kick and bass don’t talk, nothing else matters.
2. Leave air. Space is an instrument. Over-filling the mix kills the club.
3. Character over polish. A little grit, a little saturation — honesty over plastic sheen.
4. Check it loud and quiet. Headphones at 2 a.m. and monitors at show volume both have to work.
